Comprehensive retrofit out of
reach for many owners of
historic buildings
Approximately 70 percent of the UK’s non-residential building
stock was constructed before 2000, with around 600,000
commercial properties pre-dating 1919.
This diverse and historic collection of property means there are particular technical challenges
with standardisation. Three quarters of commercial floor space in England is rated EPC C or
lower and will need to undergo some form of retrofit to meet the 2030 EPC B target currently
proposed by the UK Government. And yet, sustainable space is in demand, as occupiers move
towards net zero commitments and investors respond to regulation, and market expectations,
and aim to avoid stranded assets. Collaboration across the sector is key to driving towards this
common purpose – see our next news summary.

Evotech sponsors BIG North Pole Sea Ice
Research Expedition
We are delighted to announce that the BIG North Pole Sea Ice Research Expedition, of which
Evotech is a sponsor, will begin on 10 April, having previously been thwarted by unsafe
landing conditions due to the melting of the arctic sea ice.
The B.I.G. project expedition team will be flown to a new start point high in the Canadian Arctic
on the pack ice of the frozen Arctic Ocean. From here, polar explorer Felicity Aston MBE, will lead
an all-female team of explorers and scientists skiing to the magnetic North Pole to take
samples of snow to support a number of important global warming research projects.
The information gathered by the expedition will be used in a number of different studies being
undertaken by scientists in the UK and beyond, at the University of Manchester, the National
Oceanography Centre, the University of Colorado and NASA.

Fire service raise concerns
over missing high-rise
building information
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue report that the required
information from almost 90 percent of high-rise blocks is still
to be submitted by building owners and managers.
Even though the regulations came into force over a year ago, a large number of building
owners or managers for whom the law applies are yet to submit the required information.
The law requires people responsible for buildings of 18m in height, or at least seven storeys,
containing two or more domestic dwellings, to provide information to fire and rescue services
including building plans, details of the external wall systems, and notification of any defective
lifts. This information is used to help the fire service plan and provide an effective response in
case of an incident at a high-rise residential building.
