How safe are we in our homes, schools and workplaces
New York City recently grappled with an air quality crisis as a result of the unprecedented scale and intensity of wildfires that have ravaged much of North America. The smoke emanating from these infernos, propelled by prevailing wind currents, cast a thick haze over the east coast of the U.S. for days.
The pollution became so bad in New York that it completely obscured the towering high-rises that define its landscape. The severity of the situation garnered national and international attention, with headlines referring to New York City as the world's most polluted city.
Advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor journeys by local authorities, little did New Yorkers know that they weren’t even safe from the pollution when they were indoors. In homes, schools, and offices across the city, an indoor air quality crisis was brewing. Armed with the knowledge
that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air, our partner Airthings sought to investigate if this catastrophic outdoor air quality crisis could be even worse indoors.

How the Internet of Things is
revolutionising building energy
efficiency
The Internet of Things (IoT) is playing a vital role in addressing the global need for improved energy efficiency and revolutionising the way we interact with technology.
And one area where its impact is particularly evident is in the field of building energy management with smart sensors and data analytics, intelligent HVAC systems, intelligent lighting systems, energy management and automation, and predictive maintenance revolutionising building energy efficiency.
By harnessing the power of IoT devices and systems, buildings can become smarter, more sustainable, and more energy efficient. The integration of IoT technology enables building managers to optimise energy consumption, reduce wastage, and lower operational costs. And, as IoT continues to evolve, the potential for further advancements in building energy efficiency is immense, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

Apprenticeships - bridging the skills gap in the building services sector
Evotech is proud of its long term commitment to apprenticeships at all levels as a vital part of its talent development strategy.
We recognise the importance of nurturing and empowering young people and aim to provide them with valuable opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to the building services industry. The company believes in fostering a supportive environment that encourages collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning for all and, in addition to on the job training, apprentices also benefit from mentorship opportunities.
Michael Howarth, a Senior Technical Engineer and one of Evotech’s longest serving team members, having worked for the company for eleven years, says, “My apprenticeship provided me with a solid foundation in mechanical engineering and equipped me with practical skills that I could apply from day one. The hands-on experience and mentorship I received were invaluable in shaping my career and since completing my apprenticeship Evotech has provided ongoing training and development opportunities that have supported my career progression with the company.”
By investing in the next generation of building services professionals, we are not only creating a pipeline of skilled individuals, but also cultivating a culture of lifelong learning and growth within our organisation.

Kitchen extract ventilation
systems key to fire integrity of
buildings
Demand for cleaning and maintenance of kitchen extract ventilation systems has increased dramatically according to BESA's Vent Hygiene Register (VHR).
There has been a 78% increase in the number of works notified to the VHR digital database since last March with the annual total passing 21,000 for the first time. The dramatic increase in maintenance has been attributed to more clients, insurers and fire officers recognising the importance of these systems to the fire integrity of buildings.
There is at least one serious fire in a UK commercial kitchen every day, and owners are becoming increasingly aware that by improving the maintenance of their grease extraction systems, ventilation and ductwork, the risk of a fire spreading can be minimised.
