Evotech exhibits at IPC Conference ’22
Now that Covid-19 restrictions have been dropped, it’s great to be able to meet people in person again at conferences and exhibitions. We recently exhibited at the NHS Infection Prevention & Control show, where we discussed indoor air quality with healthcare practitioners.
At the event we showcased the award-winning Airthings for Business indoor air quality monitors that can monitor various pollutants and environmental factors, allowing changes to be made to ventilation systems to optimise air quality and reduce the risk of virus transmission. When integrated with modern HVAC systems, significant energy savings can also be made helping estates managers reduce running costs and reach carbon emissions goals.

Commercial property leases & MEES regulations
The first part of the Minimum Energy Efficiency
Standards (MEES) came into force on 1st April 2018
making it unlawful for any commercial property
with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating
lower than an E to be leased to new tenants.
The World Green Building Council calculates that buildings are responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emissions: 28% from energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and 11% from materials and construction.
From 1st April 2023, MEES Regulations will extend to all commercial property with a
rating lower an E where the tenancy was in place before 1st April 2018. This means not
only is it unlawful for landlords to let a commercial property not meeting the energy
efficiency requirements, but it is also unlawful to continue letting a commercial
property without improving the property’s energy efficiency to at least an E EPC rating.
Landlords should also be aware that a minimum rating of EPC B will be required by
2030 and there is a newly proposed interim milestone of a minimum C rating by 2027.

‘Buildings as Safe Havens’ BESA launches latest guide
This latest guide by BESA provides
practical advice on how to achieve and
maintain good indoor air quality (IAQ). Focusing on
workplaces such as offices, schools and public
buildings it aims to make buildings a safe haven with
good indoor air quality and a plan to monitor and
maintain that quality.
“If only 10% of all Covid-19 related deaths could be directly attributed to the failure to adequately ventilate indoor spaces, that would be more than 15,000.”
With a foreword written by Professor Cath Noakes, OBE FREng FIMechE, Professor of Environmental Engineering for Buildings at the University of Leeds and Co-chair of the Environment and Modelling Group, a SAGE sub-group, this step by step guide explains how ventilation works, helps you detect potential problems and work towards improving IAQ in commercial buildings.

BIG North Pole Sea Ice Research Expedition
We are delighted to announce that Evotech Air Quality is sponsoring the BIG North Pole Sea Ice Research Expedition.
The expedition will see polar explorer Felicity Aston MBE, lead an all-female team of explorers and scientists skiing to the North Pole to take samples of snow to support a number of important global warming research projects. The expedition team will begin their journey in April 2023, skiing approximately 110km to the Geographic North Pole at 90N, to reach ‘the top of the world’ in less than 10 days.
“In 1969 Sir Wally Herbert and his team became the first men to travel over the surface of the Arctic Ocean to stand at the North Pole. 50 years later, it is no longer possible to repeat his journey.”
The information gathered by the expedition will be used in a number of different studies being undertaken by scientists in the UK and beyond, at the University of Manchester, the National Oceanography Centre, the University of Colorado and NASA.

Building Safety Act becomes law
In response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy, the
Government’s Building Safety Act has now received
Royal Assent and has been enshrined in law.
The Act includes the introduction of a Building Safety Regulator within the Health and Safety Executive to monitor compliance with the new requirements, and a New Homes Ombudsman to provide independent redress for new build property buyers experiencing problems.
“The Building Safety Act 2022 is intended to ‘create lasting generational change’ to the way in which high-risk and high-rise residential buildings are both constructed and maintained.”
The Act will also look to implement a raft of new measures designed to protect leaseholders from the costs of historic building safety defects. Most of the provisions in the Act are expected to take effect in 12-18 months’ time and will be supported by detailed regulations and guidance, yet to be published.
