Air pollution causes harm at all stages of life
According to the latest research from Imperial College London's Environmental Research Group, air pollution causes harm at all stages of life and there is no evidence to identify a threshold where PM2.5 does no harm.
The research group looked at evidence from more than 35,000 studies over 10 years, including studies from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UK Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollution (COMEAP), the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), the Health Effects Institute, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Register open for high rise residential buildings
The Building Safety Act 2022 requires all high-rise residential buildings in England that are at least 7 floors high, or 18 metres tall or higher, with two or more residential units to be registered by 1 October 2023.
It is a legal requirement to register high-rise residential buildings with the fee to register each building set at £251. As part of each application, the principle accountable person is required to provide information about the building’s structure and safety and this information can be added to applications already made from May 2023 at no additional cost.
The information provided during registration will help in assessing the building’s risks as part of your safety case report and it will also be used by the Building Safety Regulator to help prioritise buildings for the building assessment certificate process from April 2024.

CIBSE revises energy performance guideance
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has published revisions to its Technical Memorandum 54: Evaluating operational energy performance of buildings at the design stage.
CIBSE TM54 provides building designers and owners with guidance on how to evaluate operational energy use once a building's design has been developed. It covers all energy uses, both regulated and unregulated. The revisions bring the guidance up to date by taking account of regulatory changes and advances in best practice.
The 2022 revision is cited as a method that can be used to meet the new requirement for large new non-domestic buildings to produce an energy forecast as stipulated in the latest revision to Approved Document L, effective from 15 June 2022.

Clean Air Day theme confirmed for 15 June 2023
Global Action Plan, the environmental charity that co-ordinates Clean Air Day, the UK’s largest campaign on air pollution, has launched the 2023 theme for this year’s event which will take place on June 15th.
This year’s theme ‘Clean up our air to look after your mind this
Clean Air Day’ highlights increasing evidence that shows people who breathe polluted air are more likely to develop mental health and brain conditions. Download the Clean Air Day tool-kit.
Evotech has supported the day for a number of years and we launched our #CleanAirSchools campaign on Clean Air Day 2021 to help local schools monitor and improve their air quality by providing five schools with a fully funded, air quality monitoring programme. We have recently published a report on our 1 year study into classroom CO2 levels which highlights the need for better ventilation in schools.

Industry associations launch
guidance on fire stopping of
service penetrations
BESA, ASFP, BSRIA, FIS and GPDA have come together to develop and publish this free to download guide on the design, specification and installation of building services penetrations to ensure fire compartmentation is maintained during a fire.
Service penetrations in fire-separating elements are in part a minor element of a compartment wall or floor, yet they are one of the most important elements when it comes to ensuring the performance of any compartment wall or floor is maintained during a fire event.
