UK’s first cross-industry standard for net zero carbon buildings
The UK’s first cross-industry standard for net zero carbon buildings has been launched, designed to help the built environment sector meet national climate targets by providing a clear, unified definition and method for verifying net zero carbon alignment. This pioneering standard applies to all major building types and serves as a guide for those funding, designing, or demonstrating net zero carbon buildings.
Key aspects of the standard include ambitious, yet achievable, requirements for building performance and construction quality, addressing topics like upfront carbon, operational energy, fossil fuel avoidance, and renewable energy integration. The current pilot version provides technical guidelines, including specific targets and limits, evidence requirements, and reporting procedures to support alignment with net zero goals. The industry is being encouraged to engage with the pilot version, preparing for a comprehensive verification process in future updates.

UK becomes first G7 country to abandon coal
Britain has become the first G7 country to stop the use of coal for electricity production. The last coal-fired power station in the UK, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, closed permanently at the end of September, marking the end of 142 years of coal-fired electricity generation in the UK and highlighting the start of a new era in clean energy jobs.
Since 2012, UK coal power use dropped from 39% to 2%, aided by carbon pricing, renewable investments, and supportive policies. This rapid decline in coal reliance has helped stop an estimated 880 million tonnes of emissions from entering the atmosphere. This equates to more than double the UK’s economy-wide greenhouse gas output for 2023 and has saved some £2.9 billion in the process. Similar shifts are being seen globally, with major declines in coal use and costs for solar and wind dropping sharply since the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Welsh Government launches consultation on EV charging
The Welsh government has launched an open consultation on electric vehicle (EV) charging in both residential and non-residential buildings in Wales.
The Welsh Government is inviting public input on a new policy aimed at increasing electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in both residential and non-residential buildings across Wales. This open consultation focuses on proposed changes to Part S of the Building Regulations, which would require EV charge points in new buildings, buildings undergoing major renovations, and those with a significant change in use.
Under the draft amendments, every new residential building with dedicated parking will need a charge point installed if parking is within the site boundary. Additionally, any building being repurposed as a dwelling would also be required to have EV charging capability. This initiative supports Wales’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and is designed to facilitate the adoption of EVs by ensuring convenient access to charging facilities.
