Hottest summer on record affects UK business
England has faced its joint hottest summer on record, equal to 2018 according to data stretching back to 1884, in which the UK’s hottest-ever temperature was recorded as 40.3°C in Coningsby, Lincolnshire on July 19.
Four of the five warmest summers on record for England have occurred since 2003, as a direct consequence of human-induced climate change. This eye opening video shows how the earth has warmed up since 1900.
AC and fans already account for around 10% of the world’s electricity consumption and are particularly challenging for electricity grids because demand surges on hot days, often threaten blackouts if the grid can’t keep up. With extreme heat becoming commonplace during UK summer months, more businesses will need to have AC installed to keep building occupants comfortable and safe, further adding to building running costs, the burden on the grid and to global warming.
Building managers are under pressure to actively lower energy usage to meet ambitious emission targets. In addition, water restrictions could be imposed on commercial buildings if UK reservoirs are not replenished in the next few months.

Spiralling energy prices put businesses at risk
The BBC recently reported that tens of thousands of businesses are at risk of going under without government support because of soaring energy bills.
Many firms are currently facing even sharper rises than households with many fixed-rate deals for businesses expiring this October, exposing thousands of firms to full costs that could rise by four or five times or more.
Along with spiralling energy costs, and the knock-on effect of increasing fuel prices, businesses must also account for the increases to Employer’s National Insurance and the National Minimum Wage, all of which will erode profit margins further. New PM Liz Truss has pledged to "deliver on the energy crisis” and has so far mentioned the potential for a business price cap for both gas and electricity. Details are lacking and whether this will apply to both SME Businesses and Corporate Energy Buyers is yet unknown.

UK government could block developers that refuse to pay cladding costs
Developers caught dragging their heels on remediation work to fix dangerous cladding will face planning permission blocks under newly tabled rules.
Builders slow to remove unsafe cladding and other materials will be barred from obtaining planning permission and building on their existing planning permission, under regulations introduced by the government. The rules, which came into force on 1 September, will also see housebuilders that refuse to comply face difficulty getting building control signed off.
