Chris Whitty talks to CIBSE about ventilation in the post Covid world
Investing in building ventilation will play a key role in helping the country recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for future health emergencies, according to the government’s chief medical adviser, Professor Chris Whitty.
He encouraged business leaders at the recent Confederation of British Industry (CBI) conference to look closely at how they could improve the indoor air quality in their buildings to provide better long-term working conditions for their employees.

What do the updated Building Regulations mean for indoor spaces?
Richard Watts, Senior Consulting Engineer at Evotech, explains what the updated Building Regulations mean for indoor spaces.
In December 2021, the Government published significant changes to the Building Regulations and associated Approved Documents, in a bid to help the UK deliver net zero by 2050.
“There will always be a trade-off between building energy efficiency
and good ventilation, however, by integrating good IAQ sensors with
modern building management and HVAC systems, significant savings
can be made.”
The update provides an uplift to existing energy efficiency standards for residential and non-domestic buildings and marks a stepping stone towards the introduction of the Future Homes and Future Buildings Standards in 2025. The uplift includes the energy efficiency of new homes, non-domestic buildings, and existing residential buildings, through changes to Part L (Conservation of fuel and power), the introduction of Part O (Overheating mitigation) and improvements in building ventilation, including air quality and preventing condensation in Part F (Ventilation).

Evotech launches AC sanitisation solution in wake of Covid-19
Evotech has become the first UK company to offer services using the AIRsana patented solution for the sanitisation of AC & mechanical ventilation equipment.
The solution uses a jet of dry saturated steam at 160 degrees, injected at high pressure, to remove hidden dirt and kill harmful micro organisms such as viruses, bacteria and mould. It simultaneously sucks up this dirt to prevent it being dispersed into the environment.

Radon gas - the facts
Evotech Director, John Lumb, provides the facts on Radon. Exposure to radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and is responsible for more than 2,000 deaths in the UK every year, according to the UK Radon Association.
More than half of UK homes have never been tested for levels of this carcinogenic gas, and two-thirds of adults have never even heard of the substance.
“The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 impose a duty on employers to protect workers from exposure to radon.”
High levels of radon can build up in buildings of any type, size, or location and the only way of knowing the risk is to run a radon test or continually monitor the gas using a radon sensor.

Major change planned to UK fire sprinkler standards
There is major change planned to sprinkler standards in the UK, which is being driven by the European standards making body CEN.
The window for commenting on BS EN 12845-1 Fixed firefighting systems - Automatic sprinkler systems - Part 1: Design, installation and maintenance was very short, and is now closed. It’s an important document forming the backbone for commercial sprinkler protection in the UK and the changes are far ranging.
