Year-long study on CO2 levels in classrooms highlights need for better ventilation
In June 2021, on Clean Air Day, Evotech Air Quality launched its #CleanAirSchools campaign during the pandemic, to support local schools to monitor and improve air quality. We have now produced a comprehensive report on the first year’s findings focusing on CO2 levels.
Providing five schools with a fully funded, air quality monitoring programme supported by our local team of engineers and technicians we are helping teachers and pupils see what's in the air they are breathing at school and supporting them to find ways to improve it. Teaming up with our product partners, Airthings and Airly, we installed 153 state-of-the-art air quality monitoring sensors and during the first year we focussed on classroom CO2 levels as this also provides a useful measure of how adequate ventilation levels are. A year later, our team has analysed 9.2 million sensor readings across the five schools over the academic year and the results have highlighted poor ventilation issues in all five schools.

Government launches its
blueprint for the future of
UK energy
The Government’s new Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, created in February this year, has published its blueprint for the future of UK energy - Powering Up Britain.
By bringing together the Government’s Energy Security Plan, and Net Zero Growth Plan, it sets out how the Department will diversify, decarbonise, and domesticate energy production by investing in renewables and nuclear, to power Britain and provide greater energy security.
The report sets out several key targets for the UK to achieve, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% compared to 1990 levels and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It also outlines a roadmap for achieving these targets, including interim targets for 2025 and 2030.
It sets out the opportunities opening up in technologies like Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage, Floating Offshore Wind Manufacturing, and hydrogen, which will not only help the UK reach net zero, but also consolidate Britain’s position as a global leader in green energy. It aims to deliver climate security by embracing renewables and nuclear power and help deliver economic security through the creation of new green industries.

It is now illegal to rent
commercial property with
an EPC rating below E
The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards is now fully in force and from 1 April 2023, it is no longer legal to let a property with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating below E.
These requirements apply to all private rented non-domestic properties in England and Wales, even where there has been no change in tenancy arrangements. MEES legislation is set to tighten even further in the future with the minimum rating moving to C in 2025, leading many building operators to future proof their buildings by achieving an EPC C rating now.

New report released on
infection resilience in the built
environment
After a year long live study, the University of Loughborough in association with CIBSE have just issued their report on infection resilience in the built environment.
Led by Professor Malcolm Cook at the University of Loughborough, AIRBODS (Airborne Infection Reduction through Building Operation and Design for SARS-CoV-2) conducted research into infection resilience during the pandemic. The programme was supported by over 20 academic researchers and industrial consultants over its 22 month funding period and helped get large scale events back up and running following the Covid-19 pandemic.
The report provides comprehensive guidance and insights into airborne infection risks and proposes mitigation measures to improve airborne infection resilience of indoor and semi-outdoor spaces. The guidance shows how to design and operate non-domestic buildings to minimise the risk of airborne transmission of Covid-19, and other viruses.

£2.5 billion fund to refurbish
educational buildings
Millions of young people across the country are set to benefit from a significant Government £2.5 billion boost of which £1.8 billion will improve the condition of the school estate in England.
Schools and colleges will receive investment to upgrade classrooms and refurbish buildings to provide high quality learning environments.
Since 2010, one million school places have been created, the largest increase in school capacity in at least two generations. Thanks to this new tranche of funding, thousands of additional primary and secondary school places will also be created in good or outstanding schools for September 2026.
This comes on top of the School Rebuilding Programme aimed at transforming buildings in poor condition at 500 schools across the country over the next decade.

New public warning system to
warn of life threatening events
A new government public warning system, in which alerts are
sent to mobile phone users about events that may put their life
in danger, has been launched in the UK with a nationwide trial
planned for the early evening of 23 April 2023.
The Cabinet Office says the emergency alert system could be
deployed in events such as severe flooding, fires, or extreme weather, noting that similar
systems had been credited with saving lives in countries including the Netherlands and Japan.
The emergency alerts will warn and inform people who are in immediate danger from a wide
range of threats.
