National Apprenticeships Week: Building a Career from the Ground Up

Michael Howarth – the journey of a time served engineer
As National Apprenticeships Week highlights the value of vocational learning, one Evotech colleague’s career journey demonstrates just how powerful an apprenticeship can be, as a foundation for long-term success in engineering.
After leaving high school, Michael Howarth knew that a traditional academic route was not the right fit for him. Instead, he wanted a hands-on career that combined practical, on-site experience with structured learning. An engineering apprenticeship offered the ideal balance, leading him to enrol on a Modern Apprenticeship with Salford & Trafford Engineering Group Training Association (STEGTA) and begin a Gas Engineering course at North Trafford College.
The apprenticeship proved to be a highly positive experience for Michael, and with an excellent placement, alongside strong support from STEGTA and fellow apprentices, he was able to develop both technical skills and professional confidence throughout his training.
On completion of his apprenticeship, he was offered a full-time position and continued to build experience on the job. During this time, Michael progressed into a multi-skilled engineer role, gaining broad exposure across building services engineering and further strengthening his technical capability.
Mike has worked for Evotech for 14 years, during which time he has benefited from continuous learning opportunities and management training supported by the company, and his career has continued to evolve, progressing through several key roles including Operations Supervisor for the North West region, Senior Technical Engineer, and most recently, Building Performance Manager.
Reflecting on his journey, Michael credits his apprenticeship with laying the foundations for a long-term career in building engineering services, saying: “The practical, hands-on experience and real responsibility from day one shaped the way I still approach my work today, focusing on quality, problem-solving, and continuous improvement. I’m now proud to be able to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to the next generation of engineers at Evotech, supporting apprentices and early-career colleagues as they develop their own careers. Apprenticeships are a fantastic route into engineering, and I’d strongly encourage anyone considering a hands-on, fulfilling career to explore this path.”
Michael’s story is a strong reminder that apprenticeships are a valuable and rewarding route into engineering, offering real-world experience, long-term career opportunities, and the chance to grow and progress within the industry.
