Westminster forum on workplace wellbeing officially launches
A new group focused on tackling post-pandemic challenges affecting workplace health and productivity has been officially launched in Westminster.
The Policy Liaison Group (PLG) on Workplace Wellbeing was formally launched on 5 September 2024. This cross-party forum is designed to address pressing issues facing the UK workforce by bringing together parliamentarians, industry leaders, and charities. Its goal is to drive policy recommendations, foster collaboration, and support government actions that enhance employee wellbeing across the UK.
The Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent cost of living crisis have highlighted the urgent need for policymakers and employers to address long-standing issues that impact workers’ motivation and job performance. A recent report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) revealed that the annual cost of staff sickness has surged by £30 billion, reaching £103 billion. Additionally, the rise of presenteeism, where employees show up to work despite poor mental or physical health but are unable to perform effectively, is becoming a growing concern.
In addition, record numbers of people are choosing not to work, driven by a mental health crisis and widespread dissatisfaction with the workplace. This has sparked a rising demand for employers to adopt a more transparent and comprehensive approach to supporting employee wellbeing, encompassing mental and physical health as well as financial stability. Some forward-thinking employers have already begun addressing these areas.
Through regular roundtable discussions in Westminster, the Policy Liaison Group will create a platform for open dialogue between stakeholders and government officials. These conversations will aim to build consensus on the policies needed to implement effective wellbeing initiatives nationwide, benefitting workers, boosting productivity, and strengthening the UK economy.
