Warwickshire schools breathe easy as 1,000th air quality sensor is installed

3 Aug 2023

In a milestone achievement, Warwickshire County Council has taken a remarkable step towards creating a healthier environment for students by adding air quality sensors in classrooms in Warwickshire schools. This initiative showcases the Council’s commitment to providing optimal learning environments for students through the monitoring of indoor air quality in classrooms.

Recognising the gravity of the current air quality crisis, Warwickshire County Council has taken a proactive approach by initiating a comprehensive air quality monitoring programme in schools across its region. Partnering with indoor air quality experts, Evotech Air Quality, the 1,000th indoor air quality monitoring sensor has this week been installed. The Airthings state of the art sensors are strategically placed to monitor indoor air quality in classrooms across Warwickshire, providing valuable data that can be used to make informed decisions on ventilation and other environmental factors.

By accurately measuring pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and occupancy, the sensors enable the Council to assess air quality in real-time. This data helps in identifying potential health hazards so that prompt corrective actions can be taken.

Studies have shown that exposure to clean air positively affects cognitive development and academic performance and reduces the risk of airborne virus transmission indoors.

Our team recently analysed 9.2 million sensor readings and published the findings in a report after completing a 1 year study on CO2 levels in Calderdale schools which highlights poor ventilation. Evotech’s #CleanAirSchools initiative has seen our engineers install more than 150 indoor air quality monitors across five schools that provide real-time data 24/7, enabling schools to better manage indoor air quality.
